Patio umbrellas are essential for relaxing, dining alfresco, and socializing without worrying about the sun shining into your eyes or leaves plopping into your salad, wine, cocktails, and mocktails.

The best patio umbrellas, coupled with the right weighted bases, can withstand breezes (high wind can still be dangerous) and be tilted and adjusted so that you can easily control the direction and angle of your shade as the sun moves. We weighed these factors heavily in our tests.

All the patio umbrellas we tested were easy to assemble—though some require two people—and proved to be quite stable. “Stability is an important consideration, especially given the size of the canopies involved,” says Bernie Deitrick, our lead tester for patio umbrellas. “We found that each umbrella will be stable when properly installed and used.”

Ease-of-use factors, including adjustability, put the top-rated models above the others in our ratings.

While we didn’t assess the canopies—all of which provide adequate shade—they can be made from various materials, including cotton and polyester. The Sunbrella, made from a durable acrylic fabric solution that’s colorfast, may be worth the extra cost because it requires little maintenance and lasts longer than other materials.

The right patio umbrella for you depends on your budget and the size of your patio. Below, we feature our 11 top choices. Whichever you choose, remember to fold it when not in use or if severe weather threatens, and properly clean and store it so that it lasts for many seasons.
