CR's Take
Based on the old S70 sedan, the C70 tried to bring a little flash to Volvo's staid lineup, but it didn't catch on very well. The coupe has been discontinued and the convertible is being phased out. Handling is capable but not sporty. The turbocharged 242-hp five-cylinder engine doesn't feel responsive unless it's revved hard. The 197-hp light-pressure turbo has greater torque at lower revs, and feels more responsive in everyday driving, despite its lower horsepower rating. The brakes work well too. Front-seat-mounted side air bags are standard. 2003 maybe the last year for the C70, though a replacement based on the S60 is in the works.
