Road Test

The redesigned 2000 Legacy improves on an already capable and high-rated car. All-wheel drive and antilock brakes are standard, as is the larger 2.5-liter engine. The car rides more quietly, and handling is fairly nimble. Acceleration falls a bit short. Interior ambience leaves something to be desired. The Outback wagon remains a viable alternative for people who would otherwise choose an SUV. Ride and handling is an improvement over the old Outback, but emergency handling can become tricky.
