Here at Consumer Reports, we’re fans of the Subaru Crosstrek, and we’re also fans of hybrids. You might assume, then, that the arrival of a Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid at our Auto Test Center would be cause for celebration, the CR equivalent of Opening Day, a new GTA release, and a Beyoncé album drop all rolled into one. We’d step away from our spreadsheets, open a bottle of CR’s top-rated dealcoholized sparkling wine, set fire to a copy of last year’s Autos issue, and dance around the skidpad until the sun came up.

2026-Present

Current Generation

For the 2026 model year, the Subaru Crosstrek is available with a hybrid powertrain. It is powered by a typical Subaru 2.5-liter 'boxer' engine, augmented by a 1.1-kWh battery pack. Like the regular Crosstrek, it too has a continuously variable transmission. The total system output is 194 horsepower, which is 14 horsepower more than the non-hybrid 2.5-liter engine. EPA estimated fuel economy is 36 mpg combined. Naturally, all-wheel drive is standard. The cabin sees the analog gauges replaced with a digital instrument panel. The hybrid's exterior is distinguished with exclusive colors and wheels, plus obligatory badging. The Crosstrek Hybrid comes with the latest EyeSight driver assist features, adding a driver re-engagement system that can bring the vehicle to a stop if the driver becomes unresponsive to warnings while using adaptive cruise control. Also standard are blind spot warning and rear cross traffic warning.

2019-2025

2019 Redesign Year

The Crosstrek delivers very good fuel economy and impressive ride comfort, along with competent handling that makes it enjoyable to drive on curvy roads. A plug-in hybrid provides a 17-mile mostly-electric range, and 33 mpg when operating as a regular hybrid, is also available. But such the mileage improvement and the price premium don't make it a good value over the regular Crosstrek. The standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is mated to a continuously variable transmission; this combination works fine and gets 29 mpg overall, which is among the best for small SUVs. A more powerful 2.5-liter is available and has stronger acceleration. The front seats are short on lumbar support, but the rear seat is roomy. The infotainment system is easy to use. FCW and AEB with pedestrian detection, BSW, and RCTW are all standard for the hybrid. The Crosstrek Hybrid stopped production for the 2024 and 2025 model years.
