Anonymous, TX (2021 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Pulsation or vibration

""Within first 10k miles, started having pulsation on any high speed braking (such as highway off ramps) or on long downhill braking. Subaru did multiple replacements and turning of the rotors but problem only temporarily went away. Replaced all the brakes at approx 40k miles so now curious to see what happens.""

Anonymous, VT (2021 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Rotor and brake issue. Subaru repriced front brakes under extended warranty."

Anonymous, ON (2021 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Rotors

""Any highway braking causes front end shimmy and brakes pulsating thru the steering wheel. Dealer confirmed front rotors faulty but not fixable until replacement parts arrive. 3 months later, still waiting for brake parts to arrive and front brakes renewed to proper standards.""

Anonymous A., CO (2021 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"All the time. Subaru extended warranty on brakes on this year and 2020. Front brakes were replaced by Subaru"

Anonymous, ON (2021 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Anonymous A., MI (2021 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Hardware replacement

""The Audio Unit in the Center console failed on 8/23/24. No Radio, CD Player, Starlink, Cell Phone access. Dealer diagnosed problem. Fixed under extended 100K extended warranty with $100. Deductuble. It took 2 months to get replacement unit which was done in 10/24. There has since been a Recall and I have been advised I will get my $100. expense refunded. That was in January. I was recently advised that the check will be sent in the next 90 days.""

Anonymous, SC (2021 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

""Because vehicle is over 3 years old I had to purchase map update $120. Two ways to do it, download to home computer or use wifi to download directly to vehicle. Neither would work due to enormous size of files (100s of Mb per state). I spent hours with Subaru Service on phone only to be told its a problem on your end. I requested they send me a thumb drive with the update - "we don't do that!" Sequence is download to a computer, from computer to thumb drive, then thumb drive to vehicle. Nuts! Just send the thumb drive, they wouldn't. Oh and I cant get my money back either. Finally dealer took pity on me and used their computer, their wifi overnight with my access codes then next morning another 2 hours to download to the car. Total time I spent over 10 hours and multiple trips to dealer. NEVER buy an update again.""

Anonymous, VA (2021 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Back seat alaarm went off multiple times, usually with no passengers in the back seat."

Anonymous, CT (2021 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Anonymous, OK (2021 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

""For the entire life of the vehicle, I have periodic no-sound issues with the radio. The unit comes on, but there is no sound. Both Subaru Corporate and my local Subaru dealers (both in PA and MI), have tried to diagnose, and have replace the amplifier 4 times, but to-date, no permanent fix. Still at times, have no sound coming out of the radio.""

Anonymous A., MI (2021 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Transmission Major

What Owners Say

Anonymous, TX (2021 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Transmission rebuild or replacement

"If I hadnt noticed that the vehicle just didnt feel right and have the dealership check the problems with the transmission would not have been found. Luckily I was still within the mileage cap to be under warranty or I would have been out over $10,000. A transmission replacement should not have been needed on a fairly new vehicle."

Anonymous, OH (2021 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Car is still is having the same exact issue! However no one seems to be able to feel or hear what we do!"

"cracked windshield"

Anonymous, OH (2021 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

""One rear seat leather fabric has excessively deteriorated on the lower portion of the seat. Only one Sean, behind driver is experiencing this. Clearly a material defect but Subaru doesnt warrant the fabrics.""

Anonymous, VA (2021 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Had to have electric motor replaced because it was behaving erratically"

Anonymous, PA (2021 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

""the car was at the dealer for over a month after three attempted repairs and continued headscratching. They replaced the trunk module then something else, then finally did something with the electronics (I can't recall) and it resolved after 5 weeks. The trunk would be unresponsive and not open with any overrides, fob, or manually. then eventually it would drain the battery to 0 and the car wouldn't start. We still ended up having to pay $600 for a clear manufacturer defect.""

Anonymous A., VT (2021 Subaru Ascent Unsure 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Tire pressure monitor

"Constant stem problems that had to be replaced at $150 a pop every time we changed tires over. Even then the system constantly indicates low tire pressure when this isn't the case."

Anonymous A., VT (2021 Subaru Ascent Unsure 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Noises/Leaks

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"Water leak in headliner. Very costly to diagnose. Ended up being due to issue with roof rack installation. Dealership blamed bodywork shop that had taken it off for paint blending. However, after repair, had a leak on the other rail shortly thereafter. That rail was never touched by bodywork shop. Subaru covered that leak. We suspect both rails were a result of poor installation at Subaru. Wasnt noticed until this point because we dont normally park outside."

Anonymous, OR (2021 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"When I bought the car, I could hear an annoying wind noise coming from the right side of the car. Could not tell if it was sunroof or door. I had to park the vehicle outside of the garage for a couple of days and during that time we had several thunderstorms. When I got in the car the cup holders were full of water and the passenger floor carpet was soaked. Water was also leaking from the eyesight camera enclosure. Took it to the dealership and they had to replace the fixed roof portion glass panel of the sun roof. It appeared that the original panel had warped and that's where the leak and wind noise came from. Dealership charged me almost $500 to replace the panel. It was not covered by the manufacturers or extended warranty. Manufacturers dealership did not cover it because it was over three years old. The extended warranty purchased when the car was bought, only covered the engine, drivetrain, and electrical. Nothing to do with the body."

Anonymous, OH (2021 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Squeaks or rattles

"front passenger seat creaks on turns when occupied. Dealer says they cannot reproduce the sound and therefore unable to fix."

Anonymous A., WA (2021 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Anonymous, IA (2021 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The original oil level indicator attached to the block started leaking in 2024. Had replaced under warranty. The replacement oil indicator was again replaced in July 2025, again under warranty."

Anonymous, IN (2021 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Head gasket replaced under warranty"

Anonymous, MN (2021 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector and linkage, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission, leaks.

What Owners Say

Other minor transmission & clutch problem

"Nothing to add - all part of the same transmission clutch problem."

Anonymous, TX (2021 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Slipping transmission

""Took at 2hr plus trip with 6 passengers total and noticed some slipping of the transmission on the highway. When I got to my destination and tried to climb a hill, the transmission slipped big time leaving me crawling up a hill and leaving a burning smell once I got the car in the garage. Subaru dealer made a software adjustment on the transmission but haven't had 6 passengers in the vehicle since then to see if truly fixed.""

Body Hardware

Windows, locks and latches, doors or sliding doors, tailgate, trunk or hatch, mirrors, seat controls (power or manual), seat belts, sunroof, convertible top, glass defect.

What Owners Say

"Driver's side second row captain seat stopped moving. Track had rolled 90 deg on its side and the seat would not move in any direction. Dealership did not want to fix under warranty despite it being covered"

What Owners Say

Shocks or struts

""Struts needed replacement at 80,000 miles, and the cost is prohibitive. While not a safety issue, this problem makes the ride rather unpleasant. It's inexcusable for a car purported to be built for the outdoors to have this problem so early.""

Anonymous, NY (2021 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Climate System

AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate system, electrical failure, refrigerant leakage.

What Owners Say

A melting ground terminal increases the risk of a fire.
Summary:
Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2019-2022 Ascent vehicles. The ground bolt that secures the ground terminal of the Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) heater may have been improperly fastened, which could result in melting of the ground terminal and surrounding components.
What should you do:
Owners are advised to park their vehicle away from structures and to avoid leaving the vehicle unattended while the engine is running. An owner who notices or smells smoke coming from the dash or driver's footwell area should immediately stop operating the vehicle and turn the ignition switch to the "Off" position. Dealers will replace the PTC heater ground bolts and if necessary, replace the ground wire and the connector holder, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed February 6, 2023. Owners may contact Subaru's customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WRL-22.
