CR's Take
The G6 shares its underpinnings with the Chevrolet Malibu but isn't as well-rounded. The 3.5-liter V6 provides ample power and acceptable fuel economy but sounds coarse. The base G6 lacks agility and tire grip, but the ride is tolerable. The GT is more capable, but steering is vague. Swoopy styling impedes rear access and visibility. Interior quality is unimpressive. Coupe and hardtop convertible versions are new for 2006. For 2007 the GTP model with standard stability control, comes with a 252-hp, 3.6-liter V6 and six-speed automatic transmission. The G6 earned an Acceptable rating in IIHS side-crash tests with its optional side-curtain air bags, but a Poor without them. First-year reliability has been average.
