Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2023 Kia Niro Electric owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Climate System

AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate system, electrical failure, refrigerant leakage.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"Compressor quit working so wasn't cooling. Dealer replaced the compressor under warranty."

Anonymous, OR (2023 Kia Niro Electric Wind Electric)

""Air conditioning didnt work 2 months after purchase. Had to wait 7 months for a new part. Worked for 1 summer. Next summer, isnt working again.""

Anonymous, MD (2023 Kia Niro Electric Wind Electric)

"Air conditioner not producing cool air."

Anonymous, PE (2023 Kia Niro Electric Wind Electric)
Automatic climate control

""In heating mode, when it nears or reaches set point, heat goes off and cold air continues to blow.""

Anonymous, MA (2023 Kia Niro Electric Wind Electric)

""combined entertainment/climate controls are horrible. climate system has its own ideas about what I should want, especially when on a "automatic". Need to reset often even though "auto" is turned off.""

Anonymous A., WA (2023 Kia Niro Electric Wave Electric)
Other climate system problem

"Vinegary smells intermittent past 6 months. Multiple cleaning treatments done at home and at Kia and still unresolved. They told me to stop using recirculation and I did and the smell still happened."

Anonymous, (2023 Kia Niro Electric Unsure Electric)
Refrigerant leaks

"Refrigerant leakage required three separate dealer visits to repair successfully"

Anonymous, CA (2023 Kia Niro Electric Wave Electric)

"We have now had the car in the shop 4 times for leakage and failure of the AC system and are putting it through the lemon law process. However, we still love the car."

Anonymous, PA (2023 Kia Niro Electric Wind Electric)

EV Charging

Won't charge at home; won't work with some public chargers; won't fully charge; charge connection; charge port door.

What Owners Say

Charge connection problem

"Had to get the recall fixed because level 2 charging would disconnect often"

Anonymous, CA (2023 Kia Niro Electric Wave Electric)

"Car disconnects from charger and has to be restarted."

Anonymous A., OR (2023 Kia Niro Electric Wave Electric)
Won't fully charge

""Charging stopped prematurely, well before full charge, until a software update was installed. Major inconvenience until then.""

Anonymous, MA (2023 Kia Niro Electric Wind Electric)

"Resolved after recall."

Anonymous A., MD (2023 Kia Niro Electric Wind Electric)

Body Hardware

Windows, locks and latches, doors or sliding doors, tailgate, trunk or hatch, mirrors, seat controls (power or manual), seat belts, sunroof, convertible top, glass defect.

What Owners Say

Seat controls - power

"Power seat would intermittently stick in raised position after shorter driver had driven the car."

Anonymous A., MD (2023 Kia Niro Electric Wind Electric)

Brakes

Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, regenerative braking.

What Owners Say

Premature brake wear

"Front brakes wear down prematurely (every 20000 km) from 10 to 2. Back brakes are fine. Dealer blames it on calipers seizing because of dirt. Regenerative brake system may be involved."

Anonymous, PE (2023 Kia Niro Electric Wind Electric)

Electrical Accessories

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, USB ports, alarm or security system, remote engine start, heated or cooled seats, heated steering wheel, headlights, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, wireless charging pad.

What Owners Say

12V battery

""After leaving the car for a couple of days or more on 4 separate occasions, the 12V battery was completely dead, and the car wouldn't unlock let alone start. This despite the EV battery having tons of charge on all occasions. The EV is supposed to charge the 12V when the latter is low (there's even an undocumented yellow light on top of the dash to tell you it's doing so), but it apparently didn't. One of the times I brought it to the dealer, they told me there were 2 other Kia EVs (EV6s I believe) with the same problem. They replaced the 12V battery and that didn't fix it. They updated the software and that didn't fix it either. They finally discovered (as I had seen mentioned on some Kia online forums) that PSE&G our electric supplier was pinging the car through the KIA Connect service every 30 minutes (and perhaps much more often according to some forums) because we had signed up for off-peak charging rates through notify.ev.energy (formerly through mychargeconnect.com). I believe when I signed up for that off-peak rate, I agreed to let the latter companies ping my car to see if/when it was charging. The Kia dealer (Bridgewater NJ) said that's what was draining the battery so much. They disconnected my car from Kia Connect, and the problem hasn't happened since. It's only been about 6 weeks since they did that though, so time will tell. I've changed the Kia Connect password so that those PSEG partners can't ping the car even if I reenroll. Feel free to follow up at later on to see if it still holds true. That still doesn't answer why the EV battery didn't keep the 12V charged.""

Noises/Leaks

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Squeaks or rattles

"Struts in front had to be replaced and shocks in the rear were leaking. Also found out that rattling in back from tailgate can be resolved by adjusting tiny screws in the tailgate that periodically loosen and require adjusting/futzing with."

Anonymous, (2023 Kia Niro Electric Unsure Electric)

EV Battery

Electric/hybrid battery pack failure, replacement or malfunction, or cooling.

Suspension/Steering

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.
