CR's Take

The Veloster hatchback has an unusual three-door configuration, with a right-side rear door that allows easier access to the back seat. The unexciting base 2.0-liter and sporty 1.6-liter turbo engines are dropped. Only the track-ready high-performance N trim, with a 2.0-liter turbo engine and upgraded suspension, steering, and brakes, is available. The discontinued R-Spec trim, with the 1.6-liter turbo engine that we tested with the slick six-speed manual transmission, was nimble and exhibited tenacious grip in sharp turns. The ride is very stiff, and the cabin is loud. The controls are easy to use, including the color touch-screen infotainment display. FCW and AEB are standard. 2022 is the final year for the Veloster.

2019-2022

2019 Redesign Year

The redesigned Veloster hatchback retains the original car's unique three-door configuration, with a right-side rear door that allows access to the back seat. The base 2.0-liter engine isn't very exciting but the 1.6-liter turbo version fits such a sporty coupe better, particularly with the slick manual shifter. We got 29 mpg overall in our tested R-Spec trim with the manual transmission. Handling is nimble, with sporty versions exhibiting tenacious grip in sharp turns. The ride is very stiff and the cabin is loud, however. The top high-performance version, the N trim, is more powerful and has upgraded suspension and brakes. The controls are easy to use, including the color touch-screen infotainment display with standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. For 2021, all trims come with a suite of standard advanced safety features including forward collision warning, city speed automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist. Blind spot warning and rear cross traffic warning are standard on all trims, except the base. Also, the N Line gets a new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Only the track-ready high-performance N trim, with a 2.0-liter turbo engine and upgraded suspension, steering, and brakes, is available for 2022, the Veloster's final year.

2012-2018

2012 Redesign Year

Unique coupe-like styling and reasonably entertaining handling mark the Veloster as an original and fairly engaging auto with a distinctive asymmetrical door layout. A single rear door on the passenger side eases rear seat access and improves practicality over a traditional coupe. While the engines could be more powerful, they were willing and the manual transmission offered good shifter feel. Generous standard equipment features add to the appeal. On the downside, outward visibility is compromised, ride quality could be more compliant and better noise isolation would improve the overall experience. For those seeking the most power available, go with the 201-hp, turbocharged model over the slightly less powerful 1.6-liter normally aspirated four-cylinder engine.
