What Owners Say

12V battery

"I've had this car for 18 months. About a week ago, there was one occurrence where the car would not start. The battery was completely dead, but I did not leave any doors open, lights or electronics on, etc. I jump started it once and left it running for a bit. Tried to start it again and the ignition made a clicking sound, but the engine still didn't start. I jumped it again, took a short drive, and left it running again for a bit. After that, it's been back to normal - starts up every time. I've read accounts of other Hyundai owners who have experienced this, and I also read that there was a software update a few months ago to patch idle processes that were draining power. The software in my Kida was/is up to date, but perhaps it was a related malfunction. If it happens again, I will take it in for service/further investigation!"

Anonymous, OH (2024 Hyundai Kona SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

What Owners Say

Other/unsure

"The battery died in my driveway on two occasions."

Anonymous, NY (2024 Hyundai Kona Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)

""One morning, the car simply did not start. (There were no 'symptoms' when it was used the night before or at any time prior to that morning.) The actual cause / issue is still uncertain, as it is awaiting repair after 2 weeks (due to garage scheduling issues). The car appears not to recognize the car fob, so the electronics are largely - but not completely - disabled. (A battery booster had no effect on the electronics or the starter.) Since the transmission and parking brake are both electronically actuated, this presents significant issues for transport (eg. on a flatbed tow truck), pushing into the garage, etc. The dealership's "best guess" about this heretofore unheard of issue is that the antenna receiving the signal from the fob is somehow disabled, necessitating the deconstruction of the entire dash in order to replace it, as it's buried deep inside. They named the part, but I can't remember it (perhaps CPU or CMU?) (In truth, I find it shocking the Hyundai designers and engineers did not seem to anticipate or at least consider the possibility of a power failure disabling the gear and e-brake controls, since they seem not to have built in any kind of workaround for mechanics to access the gear / e-brake selection in order to at least move the car into a garage for repair.) Both the problem and this design oversight have greatly shaken my confidence in the reliability of the brand. (In contrast, our 2020 Sonata has been utter devoid of issues, despite its sad fishface.)""
