Road Test

The Hyundai Genesis rivals high-end luxury sedans, but costs considerably less. Its luxuriously spacious interior and quietness far transcended its relatively modest price. We were also impressed with its smooth, punchy powertrain and excellent brakes. Handling is sound, but this is no sports sedan. The only real drawback is its ride, which can be unsettled at times and doesn't live up to the standards set by other luxury cars.

2015-2016

2015 Redesign Year

The 2015 redesign brought the option of all-wheel drive for the V6, along with an updated and more-luxurious interior and advanced safety systems. Power output for the V6 engine was increased and the Genesis got a new 429-horsepower V8. While this engine demands premium fuel, it also elevates the Hyundai into the realm of performance sedans. Ride quality is much improved over previous versions, regardless of the engine choice, but the performance tires offered with the big V8 increase road noise. Smart cruise control and a rear-view camera are part of the optional Technology Package.

2009-2014

2009 Redesign Year

Hyundai's upscale sedan is impressive, especially for the price. Though it is by no means a sports sedan, handling is responsive and secure. The quiet and well finished cabin also has an unusually hospitable rear seat for a midsized car. Controls are simple, unless you buy the optional navigation system, which adds a rather fussy multidirectional controller. The car's weak link is its somewhat nervous ride. For 2012, the Genesis got a new eight-speed automatic transmission, which helped the V6 get 22 mpg overall in our tests. While a V8 engine is also offered, we found it to be only marginally quicker than the V6.
