Road Test

The Fit has an impressive amount of interior space. Honda freed up room for four adults and created flexible folding-seat options by placing the fuel tank under the floor beneath the front seats. The smooth powertrain returned impressive fuel economy with both the manual and automatic transmissions. However, road noise is pronounced, the driving position is flawed, and acceleration is slow with the automatic. Standard ABS and side-curtain airbags are commendable in this price range.

2015-2020

2015 Redesign Year

The third generation of the Fit made it quicker, safer and even more fuel-efficient. It also brought modern era connectivity and amenities such as optional heated leather seats. By and large, it carries over the Fit's trademarks of incredible space efficiency and interior versatility. The rear seat performs the same tricks of folding flat and low, or flipping up the bottom cushions to create a deep well. Handling is nimble, which makes the car fun for carving corners. The engine is responsive and fuel economy is respectable at 33 mpg overall. However, the continuously variable transmission (CVT) has its quirks and amplifies engine noise too much. The ride is less nervous in than previous models, but plenty stiff. The cabin is also loud, particularly on the highway. Ultimately, the Fit is more about being a practical local runabout than a road trip companion, even if it can pack all your belongings.

2009-2014

2009 Redesign Year

Model year 2009 brought a redesign that preserved all of the Fit's space and made it a quicker, safer, and more modern. Still, if you want stability control (ESC), which we consider a vital safety item, you'd have to look for a loaded one with the navigation system. ESC became standard with 2011 models, so you should search for that model year or newer if it fits your budget. Interior versatility is the Fit's hallmark, facilitated by rear seats that can be folded flat and low or can be flipped up against the backrest, creating a deep, flat floor that can accommodate bulky items. While not overly powerful, the Fit feels responsive, with a smooth and willing engine and agile handling that makes it fun to drive. The ride is choppy and the car is loud, so consider it as more of an urban runabout than a long distance commuter. Overall fuel economy was 30 mpg.

While quite slow to accelerate, the Fit feels responsive, with a smooth and willing engine and agile handling that makes it fun to drive. The ride is choppy and the car is loud, so consider it as an urban runabout rather than a long distance commuter. Expect a 32 mpg overall fuel economy. The Fit came well equipped with standard power accessories, antilock brakes, and curtain airbags, but we would steer you toward a newer Fit for its added safety, or a larger, more substantial car.
