CR's Take
The Yukon XL was once called the Suburbana name now exclusive to the XLs Chevrolet twin. Both of these large SUVs can be equipped to seat nine (though eight is more common) and tow a 9,000-pound trailer. Both also offer selectable full-time four-wheel drive. A 2000 redesign improved handling, though a wide turning circle hinders parking. The ride is quiet and well controlled, and seating is comfortable. The 5.3-liter V8 is powerful, but it delivered only 13 mpg overall. Traction control is available on two-wheel-drive models. A 320-hp, 6.0-liter V8 is now standard in the topmost AWD Denali version.
