Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2017 Chevrolet Bolt owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

""Sometimes, the backup camera would stay on when no longer in rear mode.""

Anonymous A., QC (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)
Display screen goes blank

"sometimes when I first start the car the display screen stays blank and it takes about 3-4 minutes to turn on"

Anonymous, MA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

""Sometime when starting the car, the display screen would not turn on. But it would automatically reboot after being blank 5 minutes""

Anonymous A., QC (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Had to pay almost $1000 and wait days for dealer to replace the faulty USB ports which allow connection to CarPlay. Within a year, they are loose and inconsistent in making a connection. They look like the cheapest USB ports Ive ever seen. Unbelievable it cost this much to replace them, and the replacement part is equally flawed. Already, I sometimes cant connect to CarPlay or charge from the console. I can still charge using the cigarette lighter with a converter or use the backseat port. But this wont project to CarPlay for navigation."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Unsure Electric)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"We have to connect iphone to the Bolt using a USB cord in order to use the handsfree telephone features. When the car was new we could use handsfree calling or answering using Bluetooth technology"

Anonymous, OR (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
Radio

"Info screen suddenly would not work. Could not use apple car play for gps. Turned out radio module was bad. Abt $2000+ to replace."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

Suspension/Steering

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Shocks or struts

"I had a spring fail on the passenger side front strut. Resulted in a pretty terrible clunk and required replacement of the spring, strut, and associated hardware. The spring is on backorder, so I had to order a used strut assembly to steal the spring out of to fix the problem."

Anonymous, OH (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
Steering wheel vibration

"The steering is a bit loose at highway speeds driving straight. I have not diagnosed the source of the issue yet, but it is annoying."

Anonymous, OH (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

EV Battery

Electric/hybrid battery pack failure, replacement or malfunction, or cooling.

What Owners Say

Electric/hybrid battery pack replacement

"Battery recall made car unusable for several months. Had to sit in the shop while they waited for new batteries to be manufactured."

Anonymous, OH (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"We purchased the 2017 Bolt knowing it qualified for a free battery replacement due to recall by GM"

Anonymous, CT (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Unsure Electric)

Noises/Leaks

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Seals and/or weather-stripping

"Well for starters, it IS an 8 year old car, so unsurprising that the weather strips are getting "tired out"! Manual says to lubricate them once a year with some sort of GM silcone "grease" ("grease" is my term). I thought that that would be goopy and attract dust. The worst seems to be at the Driver's door, but of course, that's where my ears are closest to. Not to throw them under the bus, but it woulda been nicer if they would have recommended something less goopy and more commercially available (like a silicone spray or something wipe on?)."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
Squeaks or rattles

""Sway bar bearings were worn, would make a noise when hitting a bump. Both were replaced for $167, counting labor.""

Anonymous A., NH (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

Brakes

Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, regenerative braking.

What Owners Say

Rotors

"Rotors seem to rust out prematurely. We thought it was because we were using the electronic braking too much but applying the brakes at most stops has made little difference."

Anonymous A., VT (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

Climate System

AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate system, electrical failure, refrigerant leakage.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"FAILED. Expensive replacement cost"

Anonymous, OR (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, four-wheel-drive/all-wheel-drive components, driveline vibration, electrical failure, traction control, electronic stability control.

Body Hardware

Windows, locks and latches, doors or sliding doors, tailgate, trunk or hatch, mirrors, seat controls (power or manual), seat belts, sunroof, convertible top, glass defect.

EV Charging

Won't charge at home; won't work with some public chargers; won't fully charge; charge connection; charge port door.

Electrical Accessories

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, USB ports, alarm or security system, remote engine start, heated or cooled seats, heated steering wheel, headlights, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, wireless charging pad.
