CR's Take

The major complaint we had when we tested the Z3 was its twitchy handling. The rear-wheel-drive Z3 handles well up to a point, then the rear end may slide out with little warning. A now-standard stability-control system helps address that. The ride is compliant by sports-car standards. A 2.5-liter 170-hp Six is the base engine. The optional 2.8-liter Six puts out 23 more horsesÑand adds $6,000 to the car's price. An even lustier 3.2 liter, 240-hp Six powers the high-performance M roadster and coupe. All Z3s got a mild restyling for the 2000 model year.
